The Roof Leaks Juanita’s
roof is flat. No amount of repair or retrofit
has ever overcome this basic design flaw. Water perennially pools on the roof and eventually finds its way down
into Juanita’s classrooms, hallways, library, theater, gymnasium, locker room
and offices. Over the years, teachers
have lost books and equipment to water damage. Yearly maintenance includes replacing damaged ceiling tiles and
repainting spotty walls. However, now for the first time, custodians are not allowed on the roof of the building to repair leaks because it is considered too dangerous! Fortunately, the custodian reports only one active ceiling leak at this point in time, which is located in the field house. However, prior to this point and during the course of the year, teachers reported ceiling leaks in their classrooms, particularly in the theater, field house, science classrooms and library. Teachers also expressed concern about the possibility of mold growing and asbestos fibers being released in attic spaces where leaks have repeatedly occurred.
